Can you believe February starts on Wednesday?

This week in literacy, we will be starting a short research piece on a president. Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of books on every president, but I just want to expose the students to doing a short little research projects that will help them with the bigger project. We will also be working on reading short passages and finding the information to answer questions.

We are continuing to write our persuasive letter to Ms. Neitzel. We will also be sharing the letter with her later this week. After that, we will find out which side of the debate they will be working on. The strongly agree or strongly disagree with a topic.

High frequency words this week are: story, since, ever, white.

We will take our Unit 2 Post Test on Tuesday. We will start our new Unit 3 groups on Wednesday. We will be covering measurement using standard units of measurement and nonstandard units of measurement to start with.

We will have our weekly test on Thursday since we don't have school on Friday. The high-frequency words this week are: picture, being, study, soon.

Welcome to the second half of the school year!

In literacy, we are finishing up our unit on Thinking Like a Scientist. We will finish this week learning about the Titanic, focusing on facts, vocabulary, and cause and effect. I am also continuing to do mid-year testing with Fountas & Pinnell to find their current reading level. Next week we will start our American Idol unit about famous people/biographies.

Last week I tested the students with the spelling inventory tests. Based on the information I got from the tests, some students moved to new group colors and some stayed the same color. Based on the testing some students need some refreshing about the sorts/patterns to help them become a better speller for life, not just the weekly spelling tests. High frequency words this week are: country, father, let, night.

In writing, we are moving onto persuasive writing. This week we will focus on what that means, think about the audience, what opinions we have and think about an action plan.

In math, we are continuing to work on multiplication and division facts, as well as word problems, some with multi-steps. Please continue to practice the facts with your child so they can feel successful when working on these concepts.

Happy Birthday Manning on January 16!

We do not have high frequency words this week, because we are doing our mid year testing for Words Their Way.

In reading, we are continuing to work on Thinking Like a Scientist. This week we will focus on Pompeii. I will also be starting F&P testing to find the students current reading levels.

In social studies, we will be working on mapping skills.

Happy New Year! I can't believe our break is over. I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New Year!

We are starting our new reading unit called Thinking Like a Scientist. We will be working on the main idea and details again. We will also be learning about disasters, such as Mount St. Helen.

In math, we are continuing to work on multiplication and division. We are also learning about area and perimeter, and working on solving word problems.

In writing, we will be writing a New Year's Resolution, a Thank You to the Lion's Club for donating dictionaries to our class, and finishing work on our bird reports.

We are starting our health unit, Human Growth and Development. A letter was sent home last month with information that will be covered.

Our high frequency words this week are; high, year, mother, light. Next week, words will not be sent home. We will be doing our mid year testing. This will help me see whether your child needs to be moved to a new group or stay where they are based on the different spelling stages.
